Turanga Health | Hikoi kite oranga tangata katoa - Pakeke matehiko

Our Eke Tu programme in action.

What do we hope to do?

Our team aims to deeply understand what it means for our whānau in Tūranganui a kiwa to live well. Our organisation delivers holistic Kaupapa Māori health services to whānau in the rohe, guided by our vision: ‘kia whai oranga-a-whanau mo ngā whakatipuranga’—‘building family wellness for future generations’ (turangahealth.co.nz).

To achieve this, we aim to identify the barriers that prevent whānau from achieving their Hauora aspirations, as well as to recognise the value of activities that assist them in reaching their goals. This understanding will inform our efforts to better support whānau wellness for future generations and improve our services to effectively address the complex barriers that hinder whānau from living well.

We are currently defining our "place to stand," our turangawaewae, for this project. Our focus is on laying the groundwork and understanding of what supported self-management means within the Turanga Health vision and Tikanga mo Te Hauora o Tūranganui a Kiwa. These core principles, rooted in tikanga, guide our organisation and kaimahi (staff) to ensure our services create a nurturing space for whānau to thrive.

What are we up to at the moment?

In early November, our team received ethics approval and began data collection later that month. Since then, we’ve held three wānanga with our rural and urban Eke Tū whānau, where we explored what draws them to the programme and what keeps them engaged. These kōrero have been rich and insightful, and we’re now deep into analysing the transcripts. Once complete, we’ll share our findings back with the whānau.

Our team also participated in an online masterclass on Implementation Science, hosted by the University of Melbourne. The learnings from this class will be valuable as we move toward implementing our supported self-management intervention and deepening our understanding of health implementation frameworks.

While in Auckland in March, we had the chance to reconnect in person with Ofa and Malia at the Langimalia Research Institute ahead of our in person Implementation Science workshop. It was a lovely opportunity to catch up, share progress on our respective projects, and enjoy some quality time together.
