Pacific project | Mau Maru: Implementation & Evaluation - Phase 2
What do we hope to do?
We aim to translate Pacific community needs and aspirations for living well into meaningful action. By implementing and evaluating a co-designed intervention (Mau Maru) informed by Phase 1 findings, we hope to strengthen community and service capability, foster collective learning, and support Pacific peoples living with long-term conditions and/or disability, their families, and communities to lead culturally grounded self-management approaches for living well.
What are we up to at the moment?
Fa’afetai tele lava to HDEC Northern A for their approval to kickstart Phase 2 of our research project.
Our Phase 2 action plan involves:
(1) Recruiting Pacific participants living with a long-term condition and/or disability (n=24);
(2) Implementing and evaluating the co-designed intervention developed through Phase 1;
(3) Strengthening community and service capability through shared learning and collaboration; and
(4) Celebrating and acknowledging the Pacific communities whose insights, experiences, and leadership have helped shape this research.
Our team
The project is led by Dr Ofa Dewes.
Ms Malia Tagatanu’u is the Research Fellow for the project.
Ms Lina Seve is the Research Assistant for the project.
News
· The Cause Collective (TCC) have entered into a Memorandum of Commitment with the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery on 25 May 2026.
· Ofa attended the official opening of The Cause Collective’s Research Lab at the University of Otago, Dunedin, on 20 July 2026. The event was officiated by the University of Otago Vice Chancellor, The Honourable Grant Robertson.
· Malia and Lina attended TCC’s 10 Year Anniversary celebration, recognising and celebrating the contributions and achievements of staff on 31 July 2026.
· Malia will be presenting alongside Eliana Viali (PhD Candidate, School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago) at the Moanaroa Mana Ola Interdisciplinary Pacific Health Research Conference, hosted by Auckland University of Technology Moanaroa Pacific Research Network on 1-2 September 2026.
